The State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability (SEMAS) was created on May 11, 1988, by Law No. 5457, when it was then called the State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Environment (SECTAM). The body was reorganized by Law No. 5,752, of July 26, 1993, and on July 30, 2007, by Law No. 7026, it was separated from Science and Technology, remaining only with the Environment, and became the current name .
